Preventing Conveyor Belt Slippage on High-Speed Packaging Lines
Conveyor slippage causes packaging timing errors, product package damage, and belt wear. Correcting slippage is key to maintaining packaging line OEE.
1. Diagnosing the Root Cause
Belt slippage typically stems from insufficient belt tension, worn drive pulley lagging, or foreign debris (oils, dust) on the belt underside. If the drive motor runs but the belt slips or jerks, check the friction surfaces first.
2. Positive Drive Integration
For high-speed synchronization (such as sorting lines and packaging feeders), standard friction-drive belts can slide. Upgrading to plastic modular belts or timing belts with positive tooth profiles (running on matched sprockets) completely eliminates slippage risk.
3. Custom Polymer Chain Guides
High-speed conveyor chains can experience high-frequency vibrations. Installing low-friction UHMWPE chain guides and wear strips supports the belt structure, reduces drag, and prevents tracking drift.
4. Pulley Lagging Upgrades
Applying textured rubber or polyurethane lagging wraps to the metal drive pulley increases the coefficient of friction, allowing the belt to operate smoothly at lower overall tension, which extends shaft bearing life.
