Steam Control Valve Selection for Dairy Pasteurization Systems
Dairy pasteurization requires precise temperature regulation. Modulating the steam supply flowing to the plate heat exchangers is critical to prevent product burn-on or under-pasteurization.
1. Pneumatic Diaphragm vs. Electric Actuators
Pneumatic actuators are the preferred choice for safety-critical dairy lines. They offer extremely fast stroke responses and include automatic fail-safe spring-return setups (closing the steam line during air pressure loss). Motorized electric actuators, while precise, lack rapid safety fallback speeds.
2. Hardened Stainless Steel Trim
High-velocity steam can erode standard valve plugs and seats over time, causing flow calibration drift. Selecting steam control valves with hardened stainless steel trim ensures the plug profile remains intact over millions of cycles.
3. Sanitary Clean-in-Place (CIP) Audits
All pipeline valves must comply with strict food safety guidelines. Features like crevice-free body shapes, Teflon (PTFE) stem seals, and sanitary Tri-clamp connections are essential to allow regular chemical cleaning without dismantling the steam loops.
4. High Resolution Electropneumatic Positioners
Integrating a high-resolution positioner receiving a 4-20mA signal from the controller ensures precise steam dosing, maintaining temperature tolerances within +/- 0.5°C.
